Do garment labels matter?

Checking the care labels inside a garment says a lot about you, and a little about the garment itself.

What a label is really saying

A care label is a short biography. It tells you what something is made of, where it was made, and how it wants to be looked after. It tells you what the maker valued.

  • Fibre content. "100% cotton" and "60% cotton, 40% nylon" and "40% cotton, 20% lyocell, 40% nylon" all feel different on skin and age differently in the wash.
  • Country of origin. Not a measure of quality on its own, but a starting point for asking how and by whom.
  • Care instructions. A garment that asks to be washed cold and dried flat is a garment built to last.
  • Certifications. Marks like GOTS (organic textiles) or OEKO-TEX (tested for harmful substances) are checked by third parties. They mean more than words like "natural" or "eco", which aren't regulated in the same way.

But a label is only half the story

Two tags can both say "100% cotton" and describe completely different garments.

One is made from long, fine fibres, tightly knit and gently finished. It softens with every wash and keeps its shape for years.

The other is short-staple cotton, loosely woven, that thins and pills by spring.

The same goes for polyester, silk or anything else: the word on the tag is identical, the quality isn't.

Some of the best garments made with polyester and nylon. These plastics gave us access and functionality.

But just like clean skincare has different purities and qualities, so do both cotton and polyester textiles.

What the label can't tell you is everything around the fibre: the grade of the yarn, the weight and weave of the fabric, the dyes, the stitching, the care taken in the cutting room. That part comes down to the brand, and to how much they're willing to show you.

So don't stop there. Touch the fabric. Look at the seams. Ask where it was made and by whom. A good brand will be glad you asked.

Why it matters more for intimates

What you wear closest to your body, you wear for the longest. Underwear sits against your skin for most of the day, often in the warmest, most sensitive places. It's the one category where fibre, dye and finish genuinely change how your day feels.

In ancient wellness rituals, the skin is treated as something that absorbs, not just something that covers.

What our labels say

We've tried to make ours worth reading. Made in Portugal. 100% GOTS Organic Cotton, 80% Q-NOVA Recycled Polyamide. Singla garments have always been about the ruthlessly prioritizing fibre and textile.

A small habit

Next time you fold laundry, turn one piece inside out and read it. Not to judge, just to know. The more you notice, the easier it gets to choose things that feel as good as they look.
